It seems building boxes has been a theme this summer; I’ve had a lot of fun using new and scrap wood to create planter props around our farm.
This pine box is made from new fencing materials and 2 x 4’s. This is a simplistic project that brings a little dimension to the outdoors. A planter like this can be finished with stain or paint to brighten up any dull space.
Building Supplies and Tips
- 8 ft 2 x 4’s
- 8 ft pine fence boards
Cutting and building can be established using a simple table or chop saw and a drill. Once the boards are cut to your desired measurements take a moment to sand each board prior to assembly.
Planting for Display
This planter box sits near the front of our home. We have a red theme and it seemed fitting to paint the box with my favorite Behr exterior red barn paint. This paint is amazing and lasts at least a couple years before you need to apply another coat.
I went ahead and filled the box with organic matter and potting soil, it’s been so hot and dry I just didn’t feel like digging up dirt. Sometimes you have to know when to take the easy road.
Try and choose plants for the theme of your display. I’m gearing up for fall; before you know it pumpkins and mums will be sweeping through the nurseries. I love this planter box it offers so many possibilities throughout the year.
Give this box build a whirl; it’s a fun project you will definitely be proud of when finished. By adding a little dimension you create a great focal point and we did all that with just a few pine fence boards and 2 x 4’s.
