The Heart Behind Startle Garden

I remember my first blog post like it was yesterday with fond memories thinking what sets Garden Up Green apart from all the other gardening blogs.  Without a great deal of soul searching I knew this blog was going to have heart and real life wisdom passed down from a forgotten generation.

I knew writing a gardening book was in my future but with so many out there I wasn’t sure if would be worthwhile. But then something happened over the course of two years.  This blog began to grow and I found that others were embracing simplified gardening methods.  The opportunity to teach, inspire and encourage others to pick up a shovel or power tool was happening.

This was energizing and pushed me forward to do more.  Then one morning last summer I was watering the garden where I had this experience that was beyond inspiring, to the point I couldn’t even speak, I know hard to believe.. After sharing it with Robert we started bouncing ideas across the air and Startle Garden was born just waiting for me to begin writing.

In the book I actually say, “It was like a wow here and a pow there and I wanted to dance” I never imagined a morning chore would encourage such a neat gardening book.

My goal is always focused on doing more for yourself and I thrive by sharing in the most simplistic way possible because I understand that life today is over stimulating.

Gardening doesn’t need to be difficult it’s about understanding the basics, much like riding a bike.  Once the foundation is established we can move forward with confidence.

So not only did I pour my heart into this book I also wrote in the style of a workbook.  I wanted those reading to really embrace gardening and use this book as a source to moving forward correctly.

This is why I also included a checklist and additional note pages.  I have so many favorite areas in this book but the checklist is superb because it helps keep you from skipping steps and pulls everything together in one place.

Startle Garden is a piece of my heart passed down from one generation to the next. It’s my hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing it.  You really can grow your best garden, the first thing you need is the desire and the second is Startle Garden.

Startle Garden is your guide to growing your best garden from the ground up.

    Good Morning Carole,
I love my Startle Garden Book, it is my favorite go- to gardening manual. I place it on my turquoise table with a pen, and a diet pepsi and I am set for wonderful afternoon of gardening bliss.
It is a fabulous reference tool and covers many topics that many other gardening books do not.
Thank you for including me in the project, it has been pure joy for me!

That’s awesome, it makes me smile when I can help others. I noticed that table in the trees I thought to myself what a perfect spot to relax and rejuvenate. I need to make sure that we keep some of the trees on our temporary spot in that Tiny House Community. Feeling the desire to get out there and create a Startle Garden. Did I tell you I’m putting them in at each homestead.

We’re waiting for our current farm to sell so we can move forward. Its been difficult with our schedules to try and maintain our current place and work at the other one in the mix of everything else. Can hardly wait though it’s going to be amazing.

    Hi Carole,

I love that your book is more of a workbook than a coffee table book. It’s so helpful and sharing your extensive experience and easy manner will surely be a huge help to anyone who gardens. I’ve been gardening for years and there are several good takeaways for me in there. Can’t wait till spring.

Thank you! It’s my hope that it goes beyond inspiring others and they actually do pick up a shovel and begin their own Startle Garden.

It’s so neat to hear your heart on the inspiration for your book. The memory of that moment is likely etched in your mind forever. Carole, you did an amazing job passing on your wisdom and I love how it’s all right there between the covers of one book. This will be my go-to gardening companion for years to come, and I hope every aspiring and seasoned gardener gets their hands on a copy.

Awesome! there are two other spots to enter so make sure you do that – will increase your chances to win.. The workbook option was a must, it was the only way I could figure out how to keep it from going onto a bookshelf.
