When raising quail became a reality the journey started with a modest group of Coturnix. The experience was positive and while we enjoyed the eggs, the meat was also tasty.
I decided to get another batch and this time I did something a little different. Instead of purchasing newly hatched chicks I got some that were 5 weeks old.
Because I raise mine on the ground I wasn’t sure how they would adapt because they were living in a cage with a mixture of other birds. This is not something I recommend, quail are like the runt of birds and these poor things were getting pecked. In reality this felt like more of a rescue mission.
It was important to make sure their health was on track so it was suggested I could improve their system using apple cider vinegar. I knew you could use ACV for chickens but didn’t realize the application would also work for quail.
Living on the Ground
These quail went from a cage to the ground and they liked it. They discovered bugs first and later snuggled in the grass feeling at home.
Even though the Coturnix is known to be domesticated quail, they still have instincts that encourage interaction with the ground.
Improving Quail Health Application
Apple Cider Vinegar is a natural way to improve the health of your quail. Not all Apple Cider vinegar is applicable. To receive the medical benefits you must purchase the organic variety that contains strands of proteins, enzymes and friendly bacteria.
This vinegar will look murky upon appearance and Bragg is an easy to find brand; you can purchase at most grocery stores.
What does ACV do? This is the best part because it helps the quail in many areas.
- Improves feather growth
- Prevents intestinal and fecal odors
- Expels parasitic worms quail can pick up from grass or soil
- Protects against parasites by flushing them out
- Prevents water container algae
- Improves and strengthens egg supply
This group of birds is doing great several weeks later and enjoying life on the ground. Remember quail are blessed with amazing instincts, take them to the ground and let them shine!
