Swimming Pool Zucchini

Growing zucchini in a kiddy pool acting like a raised bed for the garden.

This year I planted zucchini in an old swimming pool that I had left over from raising ducks.

This bed was easy to prepare after I drilled large holes in the bottom for drainage. The next step was to begin adding mucked hay, dirt and compost by layering each element between soil until the bed was full.

I let the bed compact for about a month before planting and then added Llama droppings because they happen to be my favorite source for fertilizer.

This pool was one of those bright blue ones so I toned down the exterior by with a little paint.

Pool Planting

Planting in the pool was fun, simple an it helped contain the plants once there full grown.  You could do something similar with a traditional raised bed or even a galvanized container.

I planted back in late April adding 3 seeds in the shape of a triangle about six inches from the edge. After lots of rain, sunshine and a little more watering we now have zucchini growing like crazy.

The secret to any gardening success is held within the soil.  Never forget to prep the soil so you garden can grow amazing produce.

  1. Thanks for sharing this post at The Green Thumb Thursday Garden Blog Hop. We hope you will join us again this week.
It's amazing what can be done with those plastic swimming pools. We raised our chicks in one this year and our ducks enjoy bathing in one outside. What a great idea to use it as a planter. I had never thought about painting it to make it look more attractive. It's difficult to tell its an old pool.

    1. Thanks for stopping by and yep I love those pools. Something I didn't mention is that after the summer season many people just toss these so you can get them free if you like to hunt for free stuff. Have a great day and I'll see you tomorrow. -Carole
